What is it and how to get rid of it the Blood Detective Way!
Below are Dr. Michael Wald’s (aka, the Blood Detective’s) responses to your most common questions about Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
Q: What is the cause or causes of SIBO?
Dr. Wald: “SIBO results when a high number of intestinal bacteria overpopulate the small intestine. The causes of SIBO are many, including autoimmune disorders, various surgeries, immune deficiency states, hormonal issues and infections to name a few. Remember, SIBO is not a condition itself…it is only a descriptive term.”
Q: How does SIBO result in malabsorption and under-nutrition?
Dr. Wald: “The overgrowth of intestinal organisms, also known as dysbiosis, often damages the small intestinal absorptive villi resulting in malabsorption and a large number of health issues depending upon the extent and types of nutrients that have been malabsorbed. Gut issues of all varieties, osteoporosis, slow healing, various aches and pains – you name it…all can result from the malabsorption of nutrition and tissue destructive processes that can occur throughout the body.”
Q: What are some of the conditions that result in SIBO?
Dr. Wald: “Here is my short list: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (IBDs), complications of gut surgery, diabetes, scleroderma, AIDS, immunoglobulin deficiency, short bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, diverticulosis, Billroth II type of gastrectomy, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Neurologic and hormonal problems can also cause SIBO. Diet is NOT a cause of SIBO, but is part of the cure.”
Q: What are the most common symptoms of SIBO?
Dr. Wald: “Symptoms include abdominal fullness, pain and cramps, bloating, watery diarrhea and gassiness as well as fatty stool and unexplained weight loss. But virtually any symptoms or health problem could result from or cause SIBO. The key is to find out the cause(s) and treat it.”
Q: What is the traditional medical treatment of SIBO?
Dr. Wald: “Medical treatment is straightforward, and in my opinion, incomplete and sometimes carries risks. Antibiotics and intestinal motility drugs along with a low carbohydrate diet is all that gastroenterologists provide. This approach is far to simplistic and incomplete to help many people.”
Q: What other health issues and complications can result from SIBO?
Dr. Wald: “SIBO often leads to various degrees of malnutrition that can result in poor healing, easy bruising, osteoporosis, loss of integrity for healthy skin, nails and hair all reflecting internal malnutrition, dehydration, liver disease and many other health issues.”
Q: Is SIBO known by any other names?
Dr. Wald: “In traditional medicine SIBO is also known as overgrowth of intestinal bacteria and/or bacterial overgrowth. In holistic circles SIBO is sometimes referred to as leaky gut syndrome and/or dysbiosis. The terms dysbiosis and leaky gut syndrome, just like the term SIBO, are descriptions and do not reveal cause(s) or natural solutions.”
Q: Dr. Wald what is the Blood Detective’s approach to diagnosing and treating SIBO?
Dr. Wald: “My approach for those with SIBO is different than that of a gastro doc in several important ways.
First, I test all major areas of the body including – immune, nutritional, inflammatory, neurologic, hepatic, cardiovascular – all of it because SIBO can be caused from issues that would not be considered a direct causal effect therefore not obvious to specialists.
Second, I compare many of the blood test results to what I call “functional” or healthy blood ranges as compared to the traditional “clinical“ ranges used by regular docs. Functional ranges often reveal “hidden” problems not easy to discern from 50 or more tests such as the ones I perform. I then, literally speaking, write a book on the results called a Blood Detective Longevity Report. The report outlines the abnormal patterns of lab results uncovered with my Blood Detective blood interpretation software program.
Third, I consider all of the above within the context of my 28 years of experience along with my carefully designed Blood Detective Questionnaires and can therefore develop a healing plan that goes beyond the cliché treatments. Instead I develop a personalized, targeted and effective approach to each person’s unique expression of SIBO.
