Response by Dr. Michael Wald to the question: "I have high blood fats and an elevated liver enzyme. My doctor says that I have fatty liver. Should I be worried?"

If you do not drink much or at all then the type of fatty liver you have is called nonalcoholic steatohepatisis (NASH). Although this form of liver problem is not considered a disease per se, overtime liver cirrhosis can develop and other complications. There is an association of fat in the liver and cardiovascular disease and your lab finding show that you may be heading down this direction.  An overall improvement in your lifestyle and diet should be undertaken and several nutritional compounds have been studied to help reduce fatty liver (they are found within my supplement suggestions below.

Here are my general dietary and lifestyle suggestions that I start my patients off with, but I individualize them based on lots more testing.

1.   Increase the amount of whole, unprocessed foods in your diet (fresh fruit, vegetables,    whole grains, beans, raw nuts and seeds) relative to the amount of processed foods you consume (pasta, bread, packaged foods).

2.   Diversify our diet by including new and different foods in your diet each week.    Rotate the foods you eat so that you don't consume a given food every day.

3.   A fat free diet is not healthy.  Fat should constitute 20-30% of our total diet.  Limit saturated fats (fats found in animal products) to less than 10% of your total diet.  Avoid fried foods, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and cottonseed oil.  Healthy oils to consume:  Unsaturated essential omega-3, 6 and 9 fatty acids found in flaxseed oil, olive oil, canola oil, salmon, cod, tuna, mackerel, currants, raw nuts and seeds, avocado and oats:  Store oils and nuts/seeds in the refrigerator

4. Eat a high fiber diet by consuming a lot of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds and minimizing your intake of eats and refined foods.

5.  Ensure you eat sufficient protein each day (about 15-20% of your diet).  Good protein sources include lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, soy products, and beans, low-fat dairy products, nuts and food-combining of grains/beans/vegetables.

6.  Decrease or eliminate refined and processed sugars from your diet.  As a substitute, use natural, unprocessed sugars high in vitamins and minerals needed to help digest them, including 100% pure maple syrup, fruit-only jams, fresh fruit, honey, molasses, barley malt, brown rice syrup and carob.

7.  Drink plenty of water each day (body weight divided by 2, multiplied by 0.8 is the number of ounces your body needs, more if you are exercising).  Avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages which are diuretics causing your bod to lose fluid.  Herbal teas, fresh vegetable and fruit juices are healthy to consume.  Diluted bottled juices and naturally decaffeinated beverages are OK in moderation.

8.  Eat several small meals throughout the day instead of two or three large meals.  This helps to balance your blood sugar and energy levels throughout the day.

9.  Chew your food thoroughly.

10.  Don't drink fluids with our meal.

11.  Don't eat when you are stressed or "on-the-run".

12.  Supplement a healthy diet with a good quality multi-vitamin/mineral complex and other nutrients indicated for our individual health needs.

Is Natural #Detoxification BullSh*t?

In my over 25 years as a holistic doc, I can tell you with 100% certainty that most products out there claiming to cause detoxification in the body are junk!  Here's a few facts that you should know if you are interested in staying healthy and extending your potential for longevity...

You've got to die of something...

Yes each of us has to die of something, but how we die and how badly we suffer, if at all, may be under our control to some extent. There are no guarantees that your health efforts such as eating well, exercising, not smoking, drinking clean water, reducing stress, limiting your alcohol intake and getting plenty of stage III sleep will extend your life, but thousands of studies have shown that it is possible.

Extend quality and length of life?

Following a health lifestyle, such as engaging in some of these things that I have mentioned above, there may be other ways to reduce toxicity in your body and therefore either prolong your life or increased the length of your life that you will spend without disease and disability. Eating and drinking foods such as broccoli is just one of them - but even mainstream medicine is catching up to what natural doctors like myself have been saying for decades; eating liberal mounts of the right foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can help detoxify the body and thus allow cells, tissues and organs to work more efficiently.  This recent broccoli study is one of no fewer than 175 that have looked at broccoli's health and detoxification effects since 1985.

Broccoli drink study proves detoxification ability

A study of 291 Chinese adults found that a daily drink of broccoli sprout tea resulted in the excretion of known carcinogens benzene and acrolein in the urine.  both of these carcinogens are abundant in the air we breath and come from car exhaust, cigarette smoke and industrial outpouring.  Those study subjects who drank the tea excreted (detoxified) 61 percent more benzene and 23 percent more acrolein than study subjects who drank a placebo.  The detoxifiying ability of brocholli is also shared by other cruciferous greens such as cauliflower and kale, but broccoli has the greatest concentration. The most important detoxifier in the crucipherous vegetables is likely indole-3-carbinol. The lead researcher of this study, Thomas Kensler says that this simple means of detoxification can potentially reduce some of the long-term health risks associated with air pollution.

Broccoli isn't alone in its detoxification ability and I recommend a diet that contains at least each of my top health pics below. I've combined all of these products in a dehydrated powdered product called Greens Detox. I almost always recommend that my patients combine Greens Detox with Longevity Complete and Reds Protect - two other dehydrated delicious products that are essentially concentrates of fruits and vegetables.

There is no substitute for a well-balanced diet rich in organically grown, non-GMO foods, but if you are a busy person like I am, consider downing a glass or two of powdered products containing dozens of healthful food products in the form of concentrates.

Myths & Facts About Detoxification

All cells of every organ detoxify to some extent, but the liver is considered to be the major detoxification organ in the body. The liver uses many of the phyo- (plant) compounds found in a healthy diet to remove and transform various toxins products both within and from outside the body . Toxins are essentially substances, that when left to accumulate in the body, or are otherwise toxic and/or cancerous at any level, can contribute or cause a wide variety of health problems and disease states.  Broccoli can detoxify many pro- or outright carcinogenic (cancer causeing) compounds; raspberries detoxify some of the same and other toxic compounds. In other words, all of the foods I've listed above, and others, should likely be combined to get the best detoxification protection. Sometimes the levels of a toxin can get too high and a special medical detoxifier may be required. For example, toxic levels of mercury will not be removed from the body by eating broccoli, but require medical levels (not just any levels) of detoxifiers such as n-acetyl cysteine, reduced glutathione, glycine, proteins, EDTA, DMPS, DMSA and others. The blood, urine and or other tissue levels of the toxin(s) in question should be tested at intervals to make sure that one's detoxification efforts are really working.

Children, Antibiotics & Side Effects

This question, and Dr. Wald's response, appeared onAE - a website where the public can post and receive expert responses.

Questioner:  Sarah

Category:  Alternative Medicine

Subject:  antibiotics and joint problems

Question:Last year my 14 year old daughter was on Clindamycin (1800mg)daily for 6 months. Overall her body handled this pretty well. During the treatment the arches in her feet began to hurt (this has subsided) and since she has finished the medicine her joints have been loose. Her shoulders and hips will pop out of socket. Her elbows or wrists feel like they need to be popped. This is not painful but worrisome for me. During and since ending the medicine she has been on a probiotic daily, vit C & D, and a  multi-vitamin. She frequently drinks greens powder. Blood work after the antibiotic treatment was normal but she went on 30day liver cleanse.

Do you have any ideas why this has affected her joints and what we can do to correct it? I worry that this might cause her to develop arthritis or something just as bad. I have also sent her to a chiropractor.

Thank you

Children, Antibiotics and Side Effects

Hello Sarah -

Thank you for your question. Your daughters joint symptoms, that you describe as loose, sound like ligament laxity - a fancy word for loose joints that can cause the symptoms that you described. Not a typical symptom of Clindamycin, but nonetheless seem to have been from the antibiotic. Clindamaycin can cause tissue and joint issues so I would report this symptom to the prescribing doctor.  If there are no objections consider:

Higher dosages of vitamin C: Buffered C Powder:

Reds, Green and Purple colored fruits and vegetables in the form of a dehydrated drink concentrate:

-     Green's detox:

-     Reds Protect:

-     Longevity Complete:

Zinc Picolinate - as it is the most common mineral deficiency of antibiotic use and required for joint health, immunity and for over 175 different enzymes in the body essential for healing overall.  Go to:

KickButt Immunity Spray 2:

Super dosage of probiotics - much higher than commercially available - consider:

Saccromyces boulardii - this beneficial yeast offsets one's risk of a very dangerous side effect of Clindamycin known as C. Difficile infection.

There is no "detox" per se needed for antibiotics but nutrition to repair the increased or "leaky" intestine caused by antibiotics (known as leaky gut syndrome).

These nutrients in combination are a good start.

I do hope that this helps.

Immune System Strengthening - How It's Done!

Hello Valarie:

Thank you for asking this question regarding how to reduce your chances of catching an infection from your husband. It's important to realize that the immune system does indeed determine how susceptible we are to becoming sick from viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and other infections agents. I have outlined below some of my best general nutritional "picks" or choices that should help maximize immunity. The best way to to support one's immune system to treat and prevent poor health and disease risk if through comprehensive blood and other forms of laboratory work.
