There is a legitimate concern that if a foreign or transgenic gene is inserted into a plant, toxins would be produced at higher levels, making the genetically modified plant dangerous for human consumption. This effect has been observed through conventional breeding methods of plants. A study conducted in Canada detected high levels of the protein Cry1Ab, found in GM Bt crops, circulating in the blood of pregnant women and their fetuses, and in the blood of non-pregnant women. It is unclear how the Bt toxin protein got into the blood; however, the study questions why GM Bt crops are being sold widely when research indicates serious concerns about the health and safety of GM products to both mother and fetus. The bottom line here is that pregnant women and their developing babies can suffer ill health effects from GMO products, including birth defects, impaired immune systems, and neurological and metabolic disorders. Unbelievably, the diet of a pregnant woman that includes GMOs may affect the genetic material of the developing fetus (gene expression), potentially affecting future generations by altering DNA (our genetic material) and through reproduction, passing on the damaged DNA.
