GM crops have failed in a few ways to deliver the benefits they have been engineered to deliver. GM crops have cost the U.S. approximately $12 billion worth of lost sales and product recalls as a result of transgenic contamination. In India, for instance, the Bt pesticide failed to be insect resistant up to 100%. This failed resistance phenomenon may result in increased, albeit ineffective, use of additional pesticide, overpopulation of insects and lost crop yields. Bt pesticide failure has also occurred in the U.S., resulting in the same implications.

Major crop failures have occurred as a result of the instability of transgenic lines. Many farmers growing GM crops have reported some level of inaction in their GM crops. The use of Bt in GM plants may also prove to be ineffective as it threatens to create Bt resistant insects and superweeds.

It is difficult to effectively analyze the difference in benefits between genetically modified crops and their conventional counterparts largely due to transgenic contamination. The Bt pesticide used in GM corn has been found in crops grown in remote areas of Mexico and Canada because of wind pollination. It is virtually impossible to grow GM and non-GM crops separately as cross contamination has become increasingly unavoidable.

Are GM crops unsafe?

GM crops have never been proven “safe.” Current safety assessments of GM crops revolve around substantial equivalence, or the comparison of a GMO to its non-GM counterpart. Substantial equivalence as a test is intended to be vague so that companies can readily use the term “substantially equivalent” when referring to their products.

Is the transgenic process itself dangerous?

The only systematic investigation of GMO in the world showed that young rats had “growth-like factor” effects in their stomachs and small intestines. These effects could not be attributed solely to the GM product and were therefore attributed to the transgenic process. Bt proteins used in approximately 25% of genetically modified crops have been found to harm many non-target insects. Some Bt proteins have also been found to cause allergies in humans. In food crops used largely to produce medicines and pharmaceuticals, Bt proteins in the foods could suppress the immune system, create toxicity in the central nervous system and cause various psychological problems.

What does the HIV-1 virus have to do with GM maize?

Incorporated into GM maize is the glycoprotein gene gp120 of the AIDS virus HIV-1. This gene is used in GM corn as an edible vaccine. However, the use of this gene could be detrimental to consumers as the gene can interfere with the immune system, combine with viruses and bacteria and create new pathogens in the body.

Dr. Michael Wald, author of his new book, Frankenfoods - Controversy, Lies & Your Health (available at, offers a riveting perspective of the GMO predicament exploring governmental and industry cover-ups, health dangers, environmental threats, GMO-free food plans and recipes, nutritional supplements and other practical solutions.  Dr. Wald declares, "The GMO dilemma is here to stay and anyone interested in protecting their health and that of their loved ones, friends and the planet, must educate themselves and take political and personal action right now!"  Considering the importance of this information Dr. Wald asks that you re-tweet his GMO links and follow him on Twitter -  @DrMichaelWald.
