GMOs - right out in the open
When a person picks a random item off a shelf in the grocery store, there is approximately a 70% chance that the random item contains genetically modified ingredients. Since Americans especially are largely uninformed about the prominence of GMOs on the market, many people do not realize they are purchasing GM products and are unaware of how to avoid such products. There are several ways to minimize one’s chances of eating foods that have been genetically modified:
- Buying foods that are “100% Organic” is the easiest and best way to make sure that one’s food contains no more than 0.01% GM ingredients. To be certified 100% organic, a food must be free from all GMOs, be produced with no artificial fertilizers or pesticides, and be taken from an animal reared without consistent use of antibiotics, growth hormones or other drugs.
Although eating organic foods is the most effective way to avoid GMOs, GM crops are becoming more and more widespread. Because of this, wind pollination and the spread of GM seeds is causing even some organic products to be contaminated by GM elements. Organic farms are often located right next to non-organic farms that spray pesticides. Thus regulations allow a certain amount of pesticide residue on organic crops — it’s unavoidable.
- Reading labels carefully is another way to avoid GM products. Be aware that the majority of all soybeans and corn products sold commercially in the U.S. have been genetically modified. Unless a product is specifically marked as organic, it is smart to keep an eye out for the following products known to contain GMOs:
- Eat only 100% grass or pasture fed beef. This same concept also applies to other herbivores like sheep. For poultry and pork, look for 100% organic, as these animals cannot be 100% grass fed.
- Produce stickers also help a consumer identify where their food is coming from, but some supermarkets may not use them. Specific codes indicate how a product was grown:
- Four-digit codes, such as 1022, indicate conventionally grown
- Five-digit codes beginning with 9, such as 91022, indicate organically grown
- Five-digit codes beginning with 8, such as 81022, indicate genetically modified
Steering clear of processed foods, which typically contain genetically modified ingredients, is also a smart idea. Speak with your local store manager and request the store implement a produce sticker system.
Shopping for locally-grown foods can also reduce the risk of eating GMOs. Foods may be GMO-free if grown locally and not on industrial farms. Also, some seeds are still available that are GMO-free. Consider starting your own garden to grow fruits, vegetables and other foods.
