Many farmers have expressed concerns about the safety of using rBST on their cattle and have opted to label their products with “From cows not treated with rBST.” In 1994, the FDA said that such a label statement was acceptable. However, in early 2007, Monsanto appealed to the FDA and FTC to declare that such labels are misleading. The FTC replied to Monsanto’s appeal with the statement, “The FTC staff agrees with FDA that food companies may inform consumers in advertising, as in labeling, that they do not use rBST.” Though Monsanto and its endorsers believe that the public should not have the right to know if rBST is in their food, as of now, consumers still have such a right.
